Two decades ago, autism was a little known, uncommon disorder. Today, with prevalence estimates increasing at an alarming pace, autism is emerging as a national health emergency. Autism is now recognized as a group of syndromes denoted as autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
The November 19 draft starts this way:
Two decades ago, autism was a little known, uncommon disorder. Today, autism is more common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined and the increasing numbers of children being diagnosed with autism has created a national health emergency. An estimated 1.5 million individuals in the U.S. are currently affected by autism.
